McKinney (WBAP/KLIF News) – Senator Ted Cruz is attending a series of town hall meetings on health care for veterans this week in Texas. The events were organized by the group, Concerned Veterans for America.
“If you look at the treatment of vets over the past several years, it really has been shameful in the VA,” Cruz says.
Concerned Veterans for America has previously set up town hall meetings with other lawmakers, including Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Joe Manchin (D-WV). The first meeting with Cruz is Wednesday evening in McKinney. Eventbrite said it has no more tickets available.
After the town hall in McKinney, Cruz will attend an event in Austin Thursday and Houston Saturday.
Some veterans’ groups have said they worry the Trump Administration will try to dismantle the VA. The legislative director for Vietnam Veterans of America says the US is already dealing with a shortage of doctors. He says a plan to allow more privatization would cost more.
Cruz says he does not want to “dismantle” the VA. He says the town halls will focus on bringing more choice to veterans.
“If a vet instead wants to go to a private hospital, wants to go to the local cardiologist down the street, that veteran should be allowed to do so,” Cruz says. “That, I think, is the most fundamental reform, and it’s something I’m fighting very hard to do.”
