Local organizations are asking the city of Dallas to unite, a year after the Dallas Police ambush.
The ‘Weekend of Honor’ is a series of events July 7 through July 9, 2017 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the shootings that killed four Dallas Police Officers and one DART Officer, and the resilience of the community.
“The concept is so that there is no one who feels neglected on July 7,” said Willie Ford, CEO of the Officer Down Foundation. “There were so many people affected by the shootings and this a chance to unify.”
The Officer Down Foundation, Black Police Association, Dallas Police Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and National Latino Law Enforcement Organization will host the ‘Weekend of Honor’ to honor those who lost their lives and to thank the community for their support. Proceeds from the weekend’s events will be split amongst the organizations to support their year-long missions, but group leaders say its about unity not money.
“In no way is this weekend anything about fundraising,” said Dallas Police Association President, Mike Mata. “Every event we have is free to anybody who comes. There will not be anyone there asking for any solicitation of monies.”
The events will be spread out at different locations across the City of Dallas.
