Denton Police Arrest Man Accused in a String of Burglaries, Sexual Assaults

DENTON  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Denton Police Department said a man who allegedly broke into several apartments near the University of North Texas and tried commit sexual assault is now behind bars.

The department’s Shane Kizer said the crimes occurred in February and May of 2017.

He said while investigators worked a string of potentially related crimes, officers from the Denton Police Department and the University of North Texas Police Department contacted Earl Thompson Junior twice in May.

Police said Thompson was involved in suspicious activity in close proximity to the area of reported assaults.

After Thompson became a suspect, Kizer said he was placed under intensive surveillance and detectives actually caught him trying to break into an apartment in the 400 block of Withers Street.

“He attempted to open the windows of apartment complexes and gain access to the potential victims inside. We also have three other cases that we’re probably going to file charges on as well,” he said.

After the arrest, Kizer said Thompson admitted his crimes to investigators, who consider him extremely dangerous.

“When you consider walking around in the apartment complex, how many eyes have the potential to see you even at all hours of the night. Yet, he took those risks to gain access to potential victims,” he said.

Thompson is facing two attempted Burglary of Habitation with the Intent to Commit a Felony charges. He’s also has three similar felony charges pending.

Kizer said the Denton community is safer now that Kizer is locked up but citizens should still remain vigilant.

“Make sure that we lock all our windows and doors. Be observant at all times. If someone comes to your door, make sure you know who they are before you open the door. During late-night hours, I would be very resistant to anyone,” he said.
