Senator John Cornyn on Short List to Lead FBI

WASHINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Senator John Cornyn is being considered as a replacement for James Comey, the former FBI Director who was fired by President Donald Trump earlier this month.

If selected, Cornyn would be the first current federal office holder to become director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation since the agency took its current form in 1935.

Cornyn became senator in 2002. He had previously served as Texas Attorney General and as a Texas Supreme Court justice.

If Cornyn were confirmed as FBI Director, Governor Gregg Abbott would have to appoint someone to serve in the Senate until a special election for his seat took place.

Cornyn is the Senate majority whip and has said he would be interested in becoming the Senate majority leader if the opportunity came up.

If Cornyn steps into the position, it would be during a contentious time in United States politics because he would lead the FBI’s investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
