ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Grief counselors were made available to Arlington High School students and staff Monday morning as they mourned the tragic death of a popular athlete.
Baseball player Clayton Winkles died early Sunday morning, after his car crashed into a tree on California Lane near Roosevelt Drive.
Investigators said they believe Winkles was traveling eastbound on California Lane and for an unknown reason crossed into the westbound lanes before he hit the tree.
After the wreck, hundreds of people gathered at the school’s baseball field and held a vigil in his honor.
Baseball coach David Nix told WFAA TV said his larger than life presence will be missed.
“They’re a very close team. It’s a bunch of great kids. He meant so much to them as a leader and a person. He was very popular around the school. So, it’s a devastating loss,” he said.
A memorial has been set up at the crash site. Funeral services for Winkles are pending.
