DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas Animal Services is kicking off its Home for the Pawlidays Program today.
About 200 dogs and cats will be available for a free adoptions. The department’s Gabi Vannini said each animal has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
“We’ve got some really cute puppies, we’ve got some really sweet dogs…whatever you’re looking for. That’s one of the great things about DAS is we have such a high volume of animals that anyone can find their perfect animal companion here,” she said.
Vannini said the impact of adopting a four-legged friend is two fold. “A lot of these animals, all they want is love. You can make a huge impact not only for the animal you’re adopting but for another animal a space will open up in that kennel that you took the animal out of.”
Animals in general are grateful for their companions but Vannini said an animal that has been rescued has an even deeper appreciation for its new home and isn’t afraid to show it.
“The way that they greet you when you walk in your door. They’re wiggling their whole body and their tail is just wagging like crazy and they’re so excited to see you. Isn’t that a great way to come home from work?,” she said.
Vannini said the department wants to stress that prospective owners need to be prepared for the responsibility of taking care of a new pet, especially during the holiday season.
“We really do advise making sure that you’re going to be home through the holidays or have a plan to care for the animal. That can be one of the big things, you know the holidays are really hectic. So, if you’re going to have a crazy holiday, make sure your prepared to have a quiet space for the animal.”
She said their goal is to get as many animals off the street as possible and into forever homes.
The adoption is at the Dallas Animal Services building at 1818 North Westmoreland Road. It ends Monday evening.
