DFW International Airport (WBAP/KLIF News) – Thanksgiving is next week, which means it’s time for the holiday travel rush. The TSA is giving some tips on how you can make your trip go as smoothly as possible. TSA agent Crystal Cherry at DFW International says before you leave home, check your bags.
“Thinks like knives, you’re looking at things like large liquids and aerosols, guns, of course, explosives, fireworks; things like those are prohibited items,” said Cherry. “They cannot go through the checkpoint.
If you have a prohibited item, it can be mailed home, given to someone who’s not flying to hold for you until get back, or surrendered to the TSA. At Wednesday’s news conference, there were barrels full of liquor, knives, tools and other prohibited items that had been surrendered.
Firearms can be checked, under certain conditions. First, they must be declared when checking in. They must be locked in a hard-sided case, and they have to go in checked baggage. Some airlines allow ammunition to be checked, but it has to be in a cardboard, wood or metal box, which can be locked into the same hard-sided case the firearm is secured in. The same goes for ammunition magazines. Not all airlines allow ammunition, so be sure to check with your airline beforehand.
To make your travel day go as smoothly as possible, have your government-issued picture ID and boarding pass ready to go when you get to the airport. If you’re not a fan of taking off your shoes and belt, taking out your laptop and other items, Cherry recommends enrolling in the TSA Pre-Check program…you can do that at the TSA website.
Finally, she said once you have placed your carry-on items on the conveyor to be X-rayed, you will have to either go through the body scanner, or undergo a put-down. There’s no avoiding it, one or the other, she said.
