Southlake (WBAP/KLIF News) – The parents of an 8-year-old autistic boy are suing the City of Southlake and a former school resource officer. The lawsuit alleges the city and Randy Baker violated the boy’s civil rights.
It was filed back in January by Chad and Martha Wilson after the incident at the Carroll Elementary School on January 23, 2014. Randy Baker, who supervised the district’s school resource officers, is accused of handcuffing the boy after the child threw a violent tantrum as the principal was trying to calm him down.
According to police records, the child was shouting profanities, overturning chairs and kicking the principal. Baker allegedly engaged in a yelling match with the boy during the incident.
The parents claim Baker never asked if the boy was special needs and did not use the school district’s crisis intervention prevention strategies.
The Wilsons claim the city failed to “have policies, procedures, practices and customs in place to protect [the child] from the very same professional staff who were intended to keep him safe.”
Baker was fired as a result of the incident. The parents are seeking compensatory damages for past and future emotional suffering.
