Dallas’ Third “Tent City” Shuts Down Permanently Today

tent-cityDallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – The remaining 37 people living at the encampment under I-30 near Haskell and South Hill Avenues were forced to clear out this morning.

Over the last few weeks, the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance and the Street Outreach Initiative managed to place 45 residents of the encampment into shelters and permanent housing. The organizations said those numbers exceed the goal of 41. Both organizations are still working to find shelter for the remaining homeless.

Today’s closure is the third tent city to be shut down in Dallas since May. The impact of the housing-oriented closures won’t be known until the annual homeless count next January.

The last count taken in January 2016 showed there were 539 unsheltered homeless people in Dallas. MDHA said they will need 1,000 volunteers in order to conduct a full and accurate count next year. Registration to volunteer will open next month.
