Oncor Sends Hundreds of Workers to Help with Hurricane Matthew

oncor-convoy-1Terrell (WBAP/KLIF News) – About 450 Oncor crew members and contractors left North Texas Thursday morning and headed East to help with the potential devastation anticipated from Hurricane Matthew.

It’s part of Oncor’s Mutual Assistance Program where they collaborate with other energy companies across the country to help out whenever there is a natural disaster.

Oncor’s Kris Spears said they left today because a storm like Matthew can be unpredictable. “It’s to our benefit to be able to start a couple of days early, be able to hang back a little bit and really take direction from these mutual assistance partners,” said Spears.

He said the crews that will help render aid in Florida and Georgia are very experienced. “The people that are traveling today are very experienced with storms not just here in North Texas but also hurricanes of the magnitude of Hurricane Matthew,” said Spears.

About ten to twelve trucks met up at the Tanger Outlets in Terrell this morning but many others left from various Oncor locations around the Metroplex and are meeting in Mississippi tonight. Spears said even though they are sending hundreds of employees out of state, the company still has North Texas covered.

“We’re making sure that we have the right number of employees and equipment spread out across North Texas to obviously cover the customers that are our number one priority while also getting together a pretty good group that can make a substantial impact after the hurricane,”  he said.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall in Boca Raton, Florida this evening.
