Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Activist group, the Next Generation Action Network marched again in downtown Dallas, this time to show solidarity with groups protesting the recent police shootings in Tulsa and Charlotte.
Activist Corey Hughes told the crowd it’s time to stop talking and take action.
“Because it seem(sic) like every day we turn on the television, another black man, or brown man, is being killed by the hand of the cops,” said Hughes. “And protesting doesn’t stop them from squeezing the damn trigger.”
The action some of the speakers called for was to vote in the November election, especially for city and county offices. Others, like NGAN legal advisor, attorney Kim Cole, called for a boycott of non-black owned businesses.
“Keep your dollars in our communities,” Cole told the crowd. “Because until we have an impact, until they see that black dollars matter, maybe then black lives will matter.”
The rally was followed by a march down Main Street, to Belo Garden Park, then back up Commerce Street to Main Street Garden Park. Just as the rally was ending, about half of the crowd of about 250 protesters defied police instructions to stay out of the street, and blocked the intersection of Main and St. Paul. The face off continued for about half an hour, as police with riot gear and rifles stood in the street, as protesters chanted “hands up, don’t shoot”. The face off lasted about 30 minutes. No arrests were made.
