Overnight Fire Destroys Multiple Units at a Garland Motel

Garland  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The City of Garland’s Fire Marshal is investigating what caused a fire to break out at an extended stay motel overnight. The fire started around 1:30 Monday morning at the Travel Inn Motel on Garland Avenue near Miller Road. A resident told investigators she heard glass breaking and when she woke up her room was on fire.

The Garland Fire Department’s Merrill Balanciere said eleven units were destroyed and fifteen people have been displaced. He said the reason the fire spread so quickly is because the building is older and not up to current codes.

“Well, this building is old. So, at the time it was built sprinklers weren’t required. You know, so had this building so had this been a newer one it’s possible it could have been limited to one room,” said Balanciere.

He said most of the rooms have smoke and water damage. No one was injured in the fire. Balanciere said the motel is not facing any fines but will have to install sprinklers when they rebuild the property.
