A High School in Arlington Tightens Security After Gun Scare

sam-houston-securityArlington (WBAP/KLIF News) – Sam Houston High School ramped up security measures Friday after a 15-year-old student was arrested on Thursday for bringing a loaded gun and extra ammunition on campus. School officials got a tip from a classmate and called police. Police said they found the gun inside a binder in the student’s backpack.

Arlington School District’s Leslie Johnston said they just want their students to be safe. “We do have some additional security and APD officers on sight today and we will keep them as we deem necessary. We are continuing some random metal detector checks,” she said.

Johnston said the principal held a question and answer session this morning that was only open to parents. “As soon as the incident happened yesterday, the principal decided to make this available to parents today. Just to make sure we are open and able to communicate with them and answer any questions they may have,” she said.

Teachers also lined up outside the school’s entrances this morning, checking every student for their school IDs and opening everyone’s backpack. The student that brought the gun was taken to the juvenile detention center and was charged with bringing a weapon into a prohibited area.
