Lewisville (WBAP/KLIF News) – Rescuers are still searching Lake Lewisville for a man who went swimming without a life jacket on last night. His girlfriend told authorities that he jumped out of the boat and the current swept him underwater.
Game Warden Captain Cliff Swofford said she put on her life jacket, grabbed one for him, and jumped in the water to get him. The current swept her away and a passing boater picked the woman up and took her back to her boat.
Swofford said this particular rescue effort is difficult because rescuers don’t know the exact location of where the victim went under. He said the victim’s girlfriend was understandably under stress.
“She had other things on her mind other than trying to figure out where she was. We had trouble talking to her and getting that information because she wasn’t sure,” said Swofford.
He said it was natural for the victim’s girlfriend to try and save her boyfriend, but he says that can be dangerous. “Even if you’re a very strong swimmer, often times you’re just not going to be able to catch the boat because it’s going to fast to far and it’s very easy to misjudge the distance,” said Swofford. He advises anyone on or in the water to wear a life jacket.
The search has been narrowed down to an area near Oakland Park.
