Watauga Man Arrested Over Voicemail Threatening to Behead At Muslims Apologizes

Watauga MosqueWatauga (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Watauga man arrested over a voicemail threatening to behead Muslims at a local mosque has apologized. Authorities traced the threatening to call left for the Watauga Masjid Center to 36-year-old James Nicholas Smithey.

Smithey allegedly left the voicemail earlier this month and threatened to behead members of the mosque. He identified himself as an army veteran and said that Islam was a violent religion. He identified himself as the caller to police but claimed he had been drinking and didn’t remember leaving the message.

Police arrested Smithey and charged him with misdemeanor harassment. Last week, a member of the mosque says they received an apologetic voicemail from the man who claimed to be the caller who left the initial threat.
