When Heat Spikes, Texas Power Use Law Kicks In

hot 3Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – With heat in the triple digits, this is when you really need your air conditioning.

At times like these, your power company can’t shut off your service, even for non-payment.

“Disconnection is prohibited whenever the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory for a county,” says Terry Hadley with the Texas Public Utilities commission,” says Terry Hadley with the Texas Public Utilities Commission.  “Or when such an advisory has been issued on any one of the prior two days.”

But…Hadley says you will continue to rack up charges and fees, which will be added to your outstanding balance.

The same rule applies in the winter, when the law says you power can’t be shut off during cold snaps, when the high temperature doesn’t get over 32 degrees.
