Grant’s Rant – 01.26.16 – Donald Trump is NOT a Conservative, yet I Like Him!

Donald Trump is garnering support from some of my Tea Party friends that I assumed would never give a flip flopper like Trump the time of day.  At times I even have to kick myself, when I find myself drawn to him as well.  Quite frankly, the Trump appeal is a bizarre phenomenon.  I know he’s not a true conservative, yet I support much of what he’s doing.

So why do some of the staunchest conservatives support a man who has only recently embraced conservative principals?  The answer is simple.  Many conservatives are willing to sacrifice a few basic principles in an effort to fix what angers them most.  We are all tired of political correctness, vindictive media bias and establishment career politicians who put self interest above national interest every day of the week.

Trump is waging war on the things that ire us most in a way that no other candidate can.  Trump speaks to the everyday voter, blue collar workers who are fed up with the status quo.  He also has an uncanny ability to make us smile, even when he’s angry.  Remember, anger is by far the ugliest emotion.  It’s unattractive, yet it sums up how we all feel.  Donald Trump’s humor makes his supporters feel hopeful about the future, so the focus isn’t only on anger.  It’s an ability his rival Ted Cruz has been unable to master.

Trump’s ability to humor and entertain the masses is one reason why he’s soaring in the polls.  You may be surprised at my belief that his poll numbers may be even stronger than reported.  Many conservatives are simply ashamed to admit they are voting for Trump.  In public they say one thing; in the voting booth they may do another.

As for me, I am conflicted when it comes to choosing my candidate.  So I won’t, not yet anyway.  Ted Cruz is the most conservative candidate in this race. Donald Trump is the most interesting.  In the end, either one of them will “Make America Great Again.”  So when our nominee is picked, all I ask is that you support him, no matter who it is.
