Damaging Storm Exposes Out of Date Traffic Signals in Dallas

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Last Sunday’s damaging storm is prompting more attention to traffic signals in the City of Dallas.

Traffic lights were out across North Texas for days after the storm. Many of them were flashing red because they were running on backup batteries. But some signals in Dallas were just plain out, not working at all. That’s because, according to Dallas City Councilwoman Jennifer Staubach Gates, many of the signals are old and not updated.

“They are not connected into a system that makes us aware that they have gone out,” said Gates. “So somebody has to report that the signal is out at whatever intersection it may be.”

The storm exposed a need for more maintenance to traffic lights.

“It definitely highlighted that we need to be more aggressive about getting these signals replaced,” Gates said.

According to Gates, the city has access to apply for grants that would help fund maintenance to traffic signals.
