Southwest Airlines Begins Flights to Hawaii

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – Southwest Airlines’ inaugural flight to Hawaii touched down in Honolulu on Sunday afternoon, marking a milestone for the Dallas-based airline.

It’s the first time the airline flew passengers so far over open ocean to such a distant destination.

Southwest veteran pilot, Capt. Michael Styer told our media partner WFAA-TV. “It’s been a bittersweet year with the passage of Herb Kelleher, we need a milestone, we need something that we can unite and stand up.” He said the new era in travel destinations for Southwest “is absolutely huge.”

The 5-and-a-half hour flight departed from Oakland, California.

WFAA-TV was the only hometown television station to make the trip.
