Mass Shootings at Two New Zealand Mosques Kill 49; Injure 48

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) – New Zealand health authorities say 48 people with gunshot wounds are being treated at Christchurch Hospital after mass shootings at two mosques killed 49 people.

They say the patients range from young children to adults and the injuries range from minor to critical. Twelve operating theaters are being used and some patients will need multiple surgeries.

President Trump tweeted his sympathies to the victims this morning:

 

About 200 family members are at the hospital early Saturday awaiting news about their loved ones.

Here at home, the Islamic Association of North Texas tweeted its shock and sympathies in the wake of the tragic event.

NEW ZEALAND (WBAP/KLIF)- Police in Christchurch, New Zealand say at least 40 people were killed on Friday during shootings at two area mosques. Police took three men and one woman into custody following the shootings, and urged all Muslims in New Zealand to stay away from mosques until further notice. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden said, “this can now only be described as a terrorist attack”.
