VEGA, Texas (WBAP/KLIF News) — The billboard in the Texas panhandle that told liberals to keep on driving out of Texas is coming down.

The owner of the billboard tells the Fort Worth Star Telegram that media coverage and social media backlash resulting from its message is the reason he’s removing it.

He says he believes in free speech, but that “this country is divided enough as it is.”

The person who paid for the billboard will be reimbursed. It received so much attention that the advertising company’s website crashed due to high volume of traffic.

The sign originally read “Liberals, please continue on I-40 until you have left our GREAT STATE OF TEXAS.”
