A man who says he once came dangerously close to committing a school shooting will visit Fort Worth this week with a message that challenges how families, educators, and communities respond to troubled young people.

Mental health advocate Aaron Stark will present “I Was Almost a School Shooter” on Thursday, November 5, as part of Lena Pope’s Strong Foundations Speaker Series. The presentation will examine how isolation, emotional pain, and hopelessness can shape behavior, and how meaningful relationships can help redirect a person’s life.

The nonprofit will host the event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at its Amon Carter Event Center, 3200 Sanguinet St. in Fort Worth, according to event details.

A Personal Story With A Different Ending

Stark has publicly described his experiences with childhood adversity, emotional isolation, and thoughts of carrying out a school shooting. His account centers on the people who helped him find another path.

Stark describes himself as a father of four and mental wellness advocate. Lena Pope says his story has reached millions and will serve as the foundation for a discussion about human connection and the importance of making others feel valued.

The presentation does not promise a simple solution to school violence. Instead, organizers aim to help families recognize when someone needs support and understand how to respond before problems deepen.

Major School Attacks Put His Message In Context

Stark first shared his near-attack publicly after a gunman murdered 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018, according to PBS. Stark’s account focused on his own isolation, his lack of access to firearms, and the people who intervened in his life.

On October 15, 2026, an attacker murdered three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

On August 27, 2025, a gunman whose court records suggest a “transgender” identity murdered two children during a Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church, which serves a school in Minneapolis, as previously covered by The Dallas Express.

On September 4, 2024, a gunman at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, murdered two students and two teachers, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s findings.

Earlier atrocities include the March 27, 2023, Covenant School massacre in Nashville, Tennessee, where a “transgender” murderer killed three children and three adults; the May 24, 2022, massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where a gunman murdered 19 children and two teachers, as previously covered by The Dallas Express; and the February 14, 2018, Parkland massacre, where a gunman murdered 17 people.

Other devastating attacks include Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman murdered 20 children and six educators on December 14, 2012, as The Dallas Express previously reported, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, where a gunman murdered 32 people on April 16, 2007, according to the university’s archives. These incidents are not a comprehensive list.

Two of these attacks involved perpetrators whose “transgender” identification has documentary support. In Minneapolis, a 2020 court order approving Robin Westman’s name change cited a female identity, as previously documented by The Dallas Express. In Nashville, investigators documented that Audrey Hale used male pronouns, adopted the name Aiden Williams, and expressed interest in “transitioning.” Available reporting does not establish the sexual orientation or gender identity of the other perpetrators in this chronology.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is reminding families that eligible Veterans buried in private cemeteries can receive a government-furnished headstone or grave marker at no cost, including at burial sites overseas.

The benefit covers the marker and delivery, but not necessarily installation, according to the VA’s guidance.

The Veterans Day reminder comes ahead of November 11. The National Cemetery Administration says an eligible Veteran with an unmarked grave can qualify regardless of the date of death. Eligibility also extends to certain graves already bearing privately purchased markers.

Who Is Eligible?

Veterans generally must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, and additional service requirements apply in some cases. Certain members of the National Guard and Reserve may qualify. The VA explains that active-duty service members who die while serving can also be eligible.

For an already marked grave, the Veteran generally must have died on or after November 1, 1990. Eligible graves without markers qualify regardless of the date of death.

The VA offers upright and flat styles, subject to cemetery restrictions.

What Is Free — And What Is Not?

The federal government pays for the headstone or marker and its shipping.

Families or other applicants must arrange placement in private cemeteries, and the government does not cover installation or foundation expenses, according to the VA’s application instructions.

Families with an existing privately purchased grave marker may instead request a VA medallion recognizing military service. The medallion benefit applies to qualifying Veterans who served on or after April 6, 1917.

Eligible recipients generally must choose between the government-furnished headstone or marker and the medallion.

How Often Is The Benefit Used?

In fiscal year 2025, the National Cemetery Administration furnished 286,863 headstones and markers overall. That total included 181,977 for Veterans interred in private cemeteries worldwide, while the agency issued another 10,055 private-cemetery medallions, according to the VA’s statistics.

The same VA report records approximately 495,951 Presidential Memorial Certificates issued in fiscal 2025.

The agency says it has furnished more than 16 million headstones and markers since 1973.

How Families Can Apply

Applicants should complete VA Form 40-1330 for a headstone or marker or VA Form 40-1330M for a medallion and provide a copy of the Veteran’s discharge or other qualifying service records. The VA accepts applications online through AccessVA QuickSubmit, by mail, or by fax.

Families should confirm that the cemetery will accept the marker style and arrange delivery and installation in advance. The VA’s instructions specify who may submit an application.

Spouses and dependent children buried in private cemeteries are not eligible for separate VA-furnished markers, although qualifying names may be inscribed on a Veteran’s marker.

Texas Connection And Other Memorial Benefits

Texas maintains state Veterans cemeteries in addition to federal national cemeteries.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Texas state Veterans cemeteries received a 99.28% satisfaction rating in a 2025 VA survey.

Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery ranked among the 20 busiest VA national cemeteries during fiscal 2025. Unlike private burials, qualifying burial in a VA national cemetery includes the gravesite, opening and closing, perpetual care, and a government marker at no cost, according to the VA’s cemetery statistics and burial-benefits guidance.

Separately, some survivors qualify for burial and plot allowances.

The VA’s current schedule lists $1,032 for burial and $1,032 for a plot for qualifying non-service-connected deaths on or after October 1, 2026. Eligible service-connected deaths on or after September 11, 2001, may qualify for up to $2,000 in burial allowance. Different rules apply to each benefit.

Families may seek a pre-need burial eligibility decision through the VA. For questions about privately placed headstones, markers, and medallions, call 800-697-6947, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, according to the agency.

As Texans head to the polls Tuesday, a federal lawsuit is challenging how the state verifies election results, with a county Republican organization asking a judge to require a hand count of paper ballots in every Texas precinct before certification of the November 3 federal election.

The Potter County Republican Party and Chairman Daniel Rogers filed the 27-page complaint October 27 in the Northern District of Texas. The case, before U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, names Potter County Elections Administrator Christy Benge in her official capacity and seeks to make her the representative of a statewide class of county election administrators.

The plaintiffs want election officials to compare manually counted, human-readable paper ballots with electronic totals and correct discrepancies before finalizing the results.

They also ask the court to prohibit certain certification duties until that verification is complete.

Security Concerns And Existing Texas Safeguards

The complaint argues that voting systems relying on machine-readable barcodes or QR codes could face software errors, supply-chain vulnerabilities, or interference involving artificial intelligence. It references federal intelligence assessments and Department of Homeland Security correspondence to support concerns about possible threats.

The plaintiffs expressly acknowledge that they do not allege altered or inaccurately reported results in previous Potter County elections. They also say they do not seek to postpone Election Day, cancel lawful ballots, or replace voting equipment before November 3.

Texas already requires post-election hand-count audits under Election Code Section 127.201. The secretary of state’s guide explains that officials generally audit at least three election-day polling locations and three early-voting locations, or 1% of each category, whichever is greater, along with a corresponding sample of mail-ballot precincts. That sample-based system falls short of the complete statewide count the plaintiffs request.

Election Groups Push Back In Federal Court

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee moved to intervene as defendants October 29. The NAACP Texas State Conference, League of Women Voters of Texas, MOVE Texas Civic Fund, and Common Cause followed October 30.

The latter groups argue that introducing an unprecedented manual-counting requirement just before the election risks delays and mistakes in counting millions of votes. Their attorneys submitted a proposed motion to dismiss, according to the American Civil Liberties Union’s case summary. The court had not granted those requests in the available docket through November 1.

Judge Kacsmaryk set November 4 at 5 p.m. CST as the deadline for a response from the plaintiffs and November 9 at 5 p.m. CST for intervenors’ replies. The public docket shows procedural orders and filings, but no injunction requiring the statewide hand count through its November 1 update.

What The Fight Means For Texas Voters

More than 7.7 million early ballots had already been recorded ahead of Election Day, as The Dallas Express detailed in its November 2 election preview.

The legal dispute centers on how much independent paper verification Texas should require before officials finalize federal results. For now, the existing election procedures remain in place, and the requested statewide hand count remains a proposal before the federal court.

According to The Associated Press, two regional officials and another person familiar with the discussions said Netanyahu wants additional strikes after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections. The Israeli leader reportedly raised the issue during a weekend phone call with Trump, who made no commitment to further military action.

Meanwhile, negotiations involving regional mediators have shown progress. Discussions center on a potential agreement that would require Iran to stop attacks in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States lifting its blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran has also outlined a two-day plan to reopen the strategic waterway and resume nuclear negotiations if Washington meets its conditions.

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia warned Americans Monday to use extreme caution at airports, citing attacks by Iranian-supported Houthis on civilian aviation and critical infrastructure. Its November 2 security alert warned of potential airspace closures, canceled flights, and wider hostilities.

Saudi authorities separately said air defenses intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile headed toward the kingdom’s southern region Monday. Civil Defense alerts for four cities were later lifted, Reuters reported.

US Personnel Ordered To Depart

The State Department ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave Saudi Arabia effective October 23. The department continues to classify the country as Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” according to its official travel advisory. The departure order preceded Monday’s security alert and is not a new November 2 evacuation order.

U.S. government employees remaining in Saudi Arabia require special authorization to use any airport. They are barred from traveling within 20 miles of the Yemen border and require permission to visit other specified locations, including Yanbu and Taif, under the embassy’s November 2 restrictions. Those rules do not amount to an order for all American civilians to evacuate.

Flights Continue, But Disruptions Persist

The embassy said Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport had partially reopened October 23 for domestic flights and some international flights operated by national carriers. Some flights had shifted to Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Qassim. Airports at Jeddah and Dammam remained operational with some delays and cancellations, according to the embassy’s update.

The same embassy alert said Saudi land-border crossings, including the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, remained open. Travelers were advised to check directly with airlines and airports before departure; the published conditions could change.

Missile Interception Confirmed; Drone Claims Unverified

Saudi authorities said the threat had passed following warnings in Khamis Mushait, Abha, Taif, and Najran, and a Saudi-led coalition statement reported a successful ballistic-missile interception on November 2, according to Reuters. No casualties from that specific interception were reported in the account.

The Houthis separately claimed to have sent drones toward Dammam airport, a radar site in Jizan, and a military transport plane. Saudi Arabia had not independently confirmed those specific operations at the time of the Reuters report.

What The Threat Could Mean For Americans

The immediate risk is to people traveling or working in Saudi Arabia.

The State Department advisory warns of missile and drone attacks, the possibility of falling debris, and dangers near military and energy facilities. It does not announce a specific impending attack on U.S. territory.

U.S.-connected shipping also faces risks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

In an active maritime security advisory, the U.S. Maritime Administration says the Houthis resumed attacks on merchant vessels and warns that American-, British-, Israeli-, and Saudi-associated shipping faces elevated targeting risks.

The Maritime Administration says Houthis conducted more than 100 attacks on commercial vessels from November 2023 through October 2025, affecting ships associated with more than 60 countries. Its September 2026 advisory also describes reported missile strikes on two tankers near Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu coast in August.

Oil markets are another possible channel for U.S. effects.

The Energy Information Administration reported that Middle East Gulf producers supplied an average of 490,000 barrels of crude per day to the United States in 2025, about 8% of total U.S. crude imports. A prolonged regional disruption could affect international crude markets, but Monday’s alert does not establish a specific change in American gasoline prices.

Texas collected $4.8 billion in net state sales tax revenue in October, up 13.3% from a year earlier, Comptroller Don Huffines announced Monday.

Construction and manufacturing led the increase, while restaurant tax remittances grew much more slowly.

The November 2 figures came one day before Huffines, the Republican incumbent appointed to the position this summer, faces three challengers in Tuesday’s statewide election.

Business Spending Drives The Gains

Sales tax remittances from construction rose 38% from October 2025, and manufacturing receipts climbed 33%. The comptroller’s report said the broad gains could reflect large projects, including data centers. Sales tax receipts from retail trade increased 11%, helped by electronics, appliance stores, and online shopping.

Restaurant remittances increased 2.3%, below the inflation rate for food away from home, the agency said. The collections mainly reflect purchases made in September and reported by monthly filers in October; they are not a direct tally of October retail spending.

The $4.8 billion figure represents net collections after refunds, overpayment credits, and prepayment adjustments, according to the comptroller’s release. It should not be interpreted as total taxable sales in Texas during October.

For the calendar year through October, net state sales tax revenue totaled $44.4 billion, 8.4% above the same period in 2025. Sales tax generated 59% of Texas tax collections in fiscal 2026, according to the comptroller.

Comptroller Is On Tuesday’s Ballot

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Huffines earlier this year, and he was sworn in on August 1. A former Texas state senator and Dallas-area real estate developer, Huffines is seeking a full four-year term as comptroller.

The Texas Secretary of State’s certified ballot lists Huffines (R), state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt (D-Austin), V. Alonzo Echavarria-Garza (Libertarian), and Shehla Faizi (Green). Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The comptroller oversees state tax collections and prepares revenue estimates used in budgeting. The office also administers other financial programs.

Will Higher Sales Taxes Lead To Property-Tax Relief?

“October’s strong sales tax collections are encouraging and reflect continued economic growth across key sectors of the Texas economy,” Huffines said in the official announcement. “These healthy collections provide lawmakers with an opportunity during the next legislative session to continue making property tax relief a top priority and help Texans keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Legislative decisions, budget commitments, and future collections will determine whether the higher receipts support tax relief. Huffines also called for dedicating surplus sales tax revenue to property-tax reductions in his September fiscal-year report.

Could Higher Sales Tax Revenue Help Raise The Homestead Exemption To $200,000?

Texas collected $4.8 billion in net state sales tax revenue in October, raising a question for homeowners: Could stronger collections help lawmakers increase the school district homestead exemption on primary residences to $200,000?

Comptroller Don Huffines said Monday that the revenue growth creates an opportunity for additional property-tax relief.

Texas currently provides a $140,000 exemption from school district property taxes for qualifying primary residences. Voters approved the increase from $100,000 in November 2025, extending a series of property-tax reductions adopted in recent years.

Increasing the general exemption to $200,000 would exclude an additional $60,000 of a qualifying home’s value from school district taxation. For example, a home with a taxable value before exemptions of $300,000 would have $100,000 remaining subject to school district taxes, compared with $160,000 under the current exemption, assuming no other adjustments or exemptions. The Texas Tax Code establishes how the exemption reduces a home’s taxable value.

Actual savings would depend on the school district’s adopted tax rate.

At a hypothetical rate of $1 per $100 of taxable value, the additional $60,000 exemption would save a qualifying homeowner approximately $600 annually. The higher exemption would not automatically reduce city, county, or special district taxes, which operate under separate provisions.

Texas already provides an additional $60,000 school district exemption for homeowners who are at least 65 years old or have qualifying disabilities. Combined with the general $140,000 exemption, eligible homeowners currently receive $200,000 in exempt value. Lawmakers would need to determine whether that additional exemption would remain unchanged if the general exemption increased, potentially bringing the combined amount to $260,000. The current amounts are established in Section 11.13 of the Texas Tax Code.

Huffines has previously advocated using stronger state revenue to reduce property taxes. In his September 11 revenue report, he urged lawmakers to dedicate surplus sales tax collections to lowering the cost of homeownership.

However, neither that announcement nor Monday’s report proposes increasing the general exemption to $200,000. That amount represents a potential policy change, not an enacted increase or a specific proposal announced by Huffines.

Because the $140,000 general exemption is established in the Texas Constitution, increasing it to $200,000 would require a constitutional amendment approved by voters. Lawmakers would also need to address the reduction in school district property-tax collections and determine how much replacement funding the state would provide, as it did through Senate Bill 4 in 2025.

The latest sales tax figures provide additional information for that debate. Whether the growth translates into a larger homestead exemption will depend on future revenue estimates, legislative decisions, voter approval, and the state’s other spending obligations.

A former High Museum of Art executive was sentenced to one year in federal prison Monday after stealing more than $607,000 from the Atlanta institution to pay for guitars, music lessons, and other personal purchases, according to a November 2 Department of Justice announcement.

Brady Lum’s case did not involve stolen paintings. Instead, prosecutors described years of altered invoices and improper reimbursements.

More Than 700 Reimbursements And A Disguised Guitar Purchase

Lum, 60, served as chief operating officer from January 2, 2019, until his resignation on December 9, 2025. He began diverting money in September 2019, using altered receipts, his expense-approval authority, and accounting adjustments to conceal purchases, federal prosecutors said.

In one example, a November 29, 2024, submission presented $9,147.87 in guitar-related purchases as equipment for the museum. Lum obtained more than 700 reimbursements, most for less than $1,000, according to the DOJ’s July 13 plea announcement.

U.S. District Judge Michael L. Brown imposed one year in prison followed by one year of supervised release. Lum paid $607,688.18 in restitution before sentencing and approximately $500,000 more to reimburse the museum for investigative and legal expenses, according to the Justice Department.

“Lum brazenly pilfered hundreds of thousands of dollars from a beloved civic institution to pay for his high-end guitars and other personal items,” U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said in the sentencing release.

Lum’s case is one example of how art institutions can become targets of theft, whether through financial misconduct from within or the disappearance of valuable works. Other notorious art crimes, including several with ties to Texas, have left investigators pursuing stolen treasures for decades.

Houston’s Missing Renoir Still On The FBI List

On September 8, 2011, an armed intruder wearing a ski mask stole Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Madeleine Leaning on Her Elbow with Flowers in Her Hair from a Houston home. The owner encountered the gunman after hearing a noise downstairs, the FBI reported.

The work was estimated to be worth $1 million when the FBI publicized the theft in 2012. It remains on the bureau’s Top Ten Art Crimes list, and a private insurer offers up to $50,000 for information leading to its recovery.

A Stolen Pissarro Traveled Through San Antonio

In 1981, Emile Guelton stole Camille Pissarro’s Le Marché from the Faure Museum in Aix-les-Bains, France. He later offered the work through a San Antonio gallery in 1985, where Sharyl Davis purchased it for $8,500, federal prosecutors documented.

Davis consigned the work to Sotheby’s in New York in 2003, with a preauction estimate of $60,000 to $80,000. Questions about its ownership history led to a federal forfeiture proceeding. After a 2010 jury determination and an unsuccessful appeal, the United States returned Le Marché to France in January 2012.

The Boston Heist: 13 Works, No Recovery

On March 18, 1990, two men dressed as police officers gained access to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, restrained two guards, and stole 13 artworks and objects. The museum says the case remains unsolved and its investigation continues with federal authorities.

Among the missing works are paintings by Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, and Édouard Manet.

The museum estimates the stolen collection’s value at more than $500 million and has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the return of all 13 works.
