(WBAP/KLIF) — The law enforcement community is mourning the loss of Irving’s longest-serving police chief, who died Sunday at the age of 91.

Benny Newman passed away with family and loved ones surrounding him after a life that impacted many in North Texas. Robert Reeves with Irving Police Department says Newman had a special love for the city’s youth, as he was instrumental in creating the Irving Police Athletic League (PAL). For over 30 years, the PAL has provided classes and camps to hundreds of youth annually in Irving and surrounding areas.
Before serving 16 years as Irving Police Chief from 1978 to 1994, Newman worked for Dallas PD for 23 years advancing to the rank of Captain. Reeves says Newman was well-respected by many and leaves a legacy of distinguished public service as a well-respected member of the law enforcement community, a civic leader, and a friend. Funeral arrangements are pending.
