MCKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF) – One of the detention Officers fired over an alleged involvement in the in-custody death of Marvin Scott III has been given their job back.
Scott died last month after being restrained inside the Collin County jail following an arrest on a marijuana charge. According to the Collin County Sheriff’s Office, Scott was restrained after he began acting strange during the booking process.
On April 1, Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner terminated the employment of seven detention officers said to be involved in in Scott’s death. An eighth detention officer resigned while under investigation.
“Sheriff Skinner terminated these detention officers’ employment following the Sheriff’s Office’s internal affairs investigation, which concluded that the officers violated well established Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement released on Tuesday. “In addition to his own review, the Sheriff acted on the recommendation for termination of the supervisors in each officer’s
chain of command.”
Six of the fired detention officers appealed their terminations through the civil-service process. On Friday, April 23, the employment of one of the officers was restored in the internal appeal portion of the civil-service process.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Skinner disagrees with the decision and is considering his options before the full Civil Service Commission.
The family of Marvin Scott III is expected to publicly respond to the results of the appeal on Wednesday.
