DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- A baby born at Parkland Hospital is believed to be the first in the country to contract COVID-19 while in her mother’s womb.
WFAA-TV reports that Wendy Figueroa was 34-weeks pregnant, just six weeks away from delivery, when she tested positive for the Coronavirus. But two days later, her baby had to be delivered prematurely. Dr. Mambarambath Jaleel with Parkland says they had to test the placenta.
“Having the positive testing on the placenta most likely is the explanation that yes transmission of the infection happened when the baby was in the mother’s womb,” said Dr. Jaleel.
Figueroa was not able to hold baby for three weeks, when they both tested negative for COVID-19.
