WASHINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens pharmacies have pulled Zantac heartburn medication and generic versions of the product off their shelves after the Food and Drug Administration warned the drug may contain low levels of a substance that could cause cancer.
The FDA said that Zantac and other products containing ranitidine contain a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine, also known as NDMA, at low levels.
The department said laboratory test results lead NDMA to be classified as a probable human carcinogen.
The FDA said it’s investigating what level or risk it poses to patients. The administration has been investigating NDMA and other nitrosamine impurities in blood pressure and heart failure meidcations called Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers since last year.
CVS and Walgreens said customers who bought the product can return it for a full refund.
