DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- In President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address he asked law makers for $500 million to help fight childhood cancer. The funding will take place over the next 10 years for research that could lead to new therapies for childhood cancer. The Dallas-based TeamConnor Childhood Cancer Foundation board member Caroline Alvey said this will take much more to move the dial in finding a cure but believes this is a good start.
“Having this converstation on a day to day basis, having that dialogue about the need for more research is a win for us,” Alvey said. The TeamConnor Foundation started after a brave four-year-old, Connor Cruse lost his battle with cancer in 2009. Since then, TeamConnor has donated more than $2.6 million to numerous hospitals across the country in its mission to find a cure. Alvey said less than 4% of Federal cancer funding is specifically for children and it need to change. “Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in children, behind accidents and there is just not enough research right now to put toward childhood cancer,” Alvey said. Alvey believes President Trump’s proposal will help raise awareness about the seriousness of childhood cancer and the research behind finding a cure.
