Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Dallas police are leading seminars on how to mitigate workplace violence. The training was available at a restaurant in North Park Mall Monday.
Officer Dave Wilson led the training, urging people who may find themselves in the middle of workpace violence or an “active shooter” situation to try to run, hide and fight back as a final option. He says active shooter calls have spiked over the past 15 years and the attack on officers last July 7 shows that active shooter calls are unpredictable.
“It’s proliferating at an astonishing rate,” Wilson says. “If it’s not a local incident, it’s something nationally or globally. It’s all the same thing: people are dying.”
If escape is not an option, Wilson told the crowd to find a place to hide and turn cell phones off. He says turning the sound off may leave people vulnerable if the shooter hears vibration.
If people choose to fight, Wilson says they can improvise weapons to try to stop the threat. He says active shooters will plan their attack carefully and do not expect to survive.
Wilson has also been urging architects to design offices with two “shelter in place” locations on each floor.
“Civilians, generally speaking, have not been tactically trained like police officers or military,” he says. “I don’t see an end to this. It may even get worse in the future.”
