UT San Antonio is reviewing a student’s conduct after she recited a poem mocking the assassination of Charlie Kirk during a campus “Pick Up the Mic” event with Christian Collins, the university told The Dallas Express.
The student is 19-year-old Isabela Casahuga Lemgruber, according to records reviewed by The Dallas Express. Video of the exchange circulated online and drew condemnation.
The poem and the exchange
Lemgruber recited a poem that referred to the assassination as the “Kirkiversary”:
“It was the night before the Kirkiversary
and all through the house
not a creature was stirring
not even a mouse //
The flags were hung proudly
the memes all on deck
as we solemnly remembered
a shot to the neck //
The podcast fell silent
the hot takes grew weary
for tomorrow dear friends
is the great Kirkiversary”
Collins later described the exchange on X: “a student read a poem celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk with such glee, then told me I was brave to be out here without my neck covered. I told her I’d pray for her. This is the climate. We pick up the mic anyway.”
UT System’s response
The University of Texas System shared a joint statement from Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife and Chancellor John Zerwas on X.
“We have been apprised of the incident at UT San Antonio. Let us be clear — we will not tolerate the incitement of violence or the threat of incitement of violence by any member of our UT community. UT San Antonio will handle this incident consistent with the law.”
The statement did not announce a disciplinary action or identify a university policy violation. The available material also does not establish that officials have classified the poem as unlawful incitement or a threat.
Following the video’s circulation, social media accounts shared posts about Lemgruber’s family and characterized her parents as “far leftists.” A separate website also purported to compile screenshots of Lemgruber’s social media activity and information about her mother’s work as a Houston-area real estate agent. The Dallas Express has not independently authenticated those materials, and the family information does not establish that her relatives participated in the campus encounter.
UTSA confirms a conduct review
“UT San Antonio is aware of the social media content involving one of our students and takes the matter seriously. The sentiments expressed do not reflect the values of our university,” university spokesman Joe Izbrand told The Dallas Express.
“The university is reviewing the circumstances through its established student conduct processes, consistent with applicable state and federal law and university policies. In accordance with federal student privacy protections, including FERPA, we are unable to comment further on the individual student or any specific disciplinary action.”
