A 1997 British marriage certificate lists “Nur Said Elmi” as a bride’s father, adding a family record to the scrutiny surrounding U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and allegations that she married her brother.
The New York Post published the certificate Friday and described the bride, Leila Nur Said Elmi, as Omar’s possible sister. The newspaper’s sources said they believe the father listed was Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed.
What the certificate shows
The certificate records a 1997 marriage in London’s Camden district and identifies Leila’s father as “Nur Said Elmi,” with “Military Officer” as his profession. The certified copy bears an October 19, 2026, date.

The record does not identify Ahmed Nur Said Elmi’s parents or establish that he and Omar are siblings. Omar legally married Ahmed Elmi in 2009, according to a Minnesota marriage record MPR News cited in 2016.
Federal filing uses Elmi name
In an October 21 court filing, federal prosecutors identified Omar as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The abbreviation means “also known as.”
The filing asks for additional time to respond to three applications seeking access to sealed records connected to the search of Omar’s Washington, D.C., home. The applicants include news organizations and Judicial Watch.
Prosecutors requested a response schedule tied to completion of the warrant’s execution or, alternatively, a November 9 deadline. The motion does not explain the basis for using the Elmi name or present a judicial finding of identity fraud.
Omar disputes allegations
“This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” a spokesperson for Omar’s office told Fox News Digital Thursday.
Omar has also denied that Elmi is her brother. “Insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive,” she said in a 2016 statement published by MPR News.
The Dallas Express previously covered the Post’s report that investigators had obtained DNA evidence in the probe. That report did not include public laboratory results establishing a sibling relationship.
