Texas drivers can now look up why insurance companies are declining, canceling, or refusing to renew auto insurance policies in their ZIP codes under an expanded transparency tool announced by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) on Thursday.
The new information, released October 15, adds personal auto insurance data to an existing state resource that previously focused on homeowners’ insurance. The tool provides policy counts and reasons insurers reported for their coverage decisions.
What Drivers Can Find
The expanded resource allows Texans to examine insurance activity in their ZIP codes, including the number of insured vehicles and reported policy cancellations, nonrenewals, and declined applications.
The data also identifies reasons insurers provided for those decisions, giving consumers additional information about insurance activity in their communities.
“Expanding this transparency tool is more than a data update; it’s a commitment to the Texans we serve,” Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford said in the agency’s announcement. “By giving Texans clearer insight into why insurance decisions are made, we’re empowering them to navigate their coverage with confidence.”
New Requirements Under Texas Law
The expansion follows House Bill 2067, passed by the Texas Legislature in 2025.
The legislation requires insurers to report information about declined applications, cancellations, and nonrenewals to TDI. Companies must also provide written explanations when making those decisions about home or auto insurance policies, according to the department.
The state initially launched the ZIP-code transparency resource for homeowners’ insurance in September, with plans to add automobile insurance information later in the year.
That expansion is now available.
Additional Insurance Protections
The latest development follows other actions by TDI aimed at providing Texans with more information about insurance decisions.
In September, the agency clarified that insurers cannot decline or refuse to renew homeowners’ policies solely because of the age of a home or its roof.
Companies may still consider the physical condition of a property and its components when determining coverage.
TDI has also published county-level homeowners insurance premium information and searchable insurance rate filings.
Texans can access the new insurance information through the department’s website.
Consumers with questions about their insurance coverage can contact the TDI Help Line at 800-252-3439.
