Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) says a Sanger ISD school bus was headed northbound on Huling Road when it veered off the roadway, hit a culvert, and rolled over. DPS says a 13-year-old student was taken to the hospital, where they died from their injuries. The 38-year-old driver and three students were treated on the scene for minor injuries, DPS says.

Sanger police confirmed that DPS is investigating. Sanger City Manager John Noblitt confirmed Sanger Fire and Sanger Police Department were called to a single-vehicle accident at Huling Road and Lois Road East in Denton County. Officials said the crash happened at approximately 4:55 p.m.

“We are heartbroken to share that a Sanger ISD school bus was involved in a single-vehicle accident this afternoon. The bus driver and four students were on board,” Sanger ISD said in a letter to parents on Thursday afternoon. “Our hearts are with the student’s family and all those impacted by this tragedy. We are working closely with law enforcement and emergency personnel and will share additional information with our families as it becomes available and is appropriate to release. Please keep the family and all those affected by this tragedy in your thoughts.”

The district said that the Department of Public Safety is in charge of the investigation.

“Jean and I are praying for Sanger ISD and the family of the student who tragically lost their life following this afternoon’s single-vehicle school bus crash,” Texas Senator Brent Hagenbuch said in a statement. “The district says the bus driver and four students were on board at the time of the crash. No other students were injured. I am thankful for the first responders and for  the Texas Department of Public Safety  leading this difficult investigation.”

Hagenbuch represents District 30, which encompasses Denton, Sherman, Jacksboro, and more in North Texas.

Sanger is approximately 55 miles north of Dallas.
