First Lady Melania Trump laid out her design vision for the White House and other presidential spaces during a gathering of historic site leaders.
The First Lady spoke on September 9 from the Rose Garden to open the 2026 White House Historical Association Presidential Sites Summit, which drew more than 200 leaders to discuss the America 250 celebration.
She described the White House as an architectural record of national values.
“The White House stands as an architectural autobiography of America, embodying the enduring values of ambition, democracy, and civic life through its design, craftsmanship, and the objects within,” the First Lady said.
The First Lady cited completed projects that include the White House Tennis Pavilion, the renovation of the Queens’ Bedroom and Queens’ Bathroom, conservation of the Zuber wall covering in the President’s Dining Room, and the 2020 Rose Garden restoration. Additional work covered the East Room floor, State Entrance and Hall marble floors, President’s Elevator, White House Bowling Alley, Children’s Garden, and several improvements at Camp David.
“Important design fosters collaboration, conveys dignity, inspires ambition, and creates a sense of belonging to something larger,” she said. “Within the walls of the White House, these experiences become essential to our national identity.”
The First Lady also noted that “Great design transcends aesthetic appeal; it shapes our lived experiences.” The remarks closed with her introduction of John Rogers, chairman of the White House Historical Association board.
