FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth is facing growing questions about the impact of data centers as the City Council considers several measures aimed at addressing the industry’s rapid growth.
The Sensible Data Center Coalition held a small press conference ahead of Tuesday’s council meeting, calling for a temporary pause on new data center projects.
“What we are facing here is a giant,” one speaker said.
The council approved a plan to implement a 90-day moratorium on the “acceptance, processing and approval of new applications” for rezoning or data center permits. This means city council can now begin the legal process related to the moratorium on new applications for data centers.
The moratorium begins February 16 and ends May 17. The city will also have the option to extend that moratorium one additional time for another 90 days.
“A moratorium isn’t a tantrum, it’s a timeout,” a coalition member said.
The coalition, which includes community members, says the city needs to better understand how data centers could affect Fort Worth’s infrastructure.
