A burglary investigation turned into an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday after Plano police detectives came under fire while conducting surveillance at a Carrollton gas station.
One suspect was shot by officers and taken to a hospital for surgery after allegedly opening fire on undercover detectives at a RaceTrac near the Carrollton-Plano border. Three additional suspects were detained or hospitalized, while no officers or bystanders were injured.
Shootout Erupts During Burglary Investigation
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. at the RaceTrac located on International Parkway near East Hebron Parkway.
According to the Plano Police Department’s social media post, detectives assigned to the department’s burglary unit had been conducting surveillance on a group of known burglary suspects before following their vehicle to the gas station, where officers observed a burglary in progress.
As detectives exited their vehicles to approach the suspects, at least one suspect allegedly opened fire on the officers.
Police returned fire, striking one of the suspects an unknown number of times. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to the suspect.
Four Suspects Involved
Authorities said the group consisted of four suspects — one adult and three juveniles.
The suspect who was shot was transported to a hospital, where police later said the individual underwent surgery. Officials have not released the suspect’s identity or current condition.
A second suspect was hospitalized with injuries unrelated to the shooting and is expected to recover. The remaining two suspects were taken into custody.
Because three of the four suspects are juveniles, their identities will not be released.
No Officers or Bystanders Hurt
Plano police said no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire. Authorities also confirmed that no RaceTrac employees, customers, or other members of the public were injured.
Police believe the incident was isolated and said there are no outstanding suspects connected to the shooting.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials have not released details about the burglary investigation that led detectives to the suspects or the charges they may face.
It remains unclear how many detectives fired their weapons during the incident.
Plano police are conducting a separate internal investigation, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting. Detectives involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
The Carrollton Police Department, the Plano Police Department’s Professional Standards Unit, and the Denton County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation of the incident.
