(WBAP/KLIF) Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner posted a video to social media announcing that he is suspending his campaign. The announcement comes after a wave of mounting pressure from top national and state Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) , following serious sexual assault allegations from a former partner.
While Platner continues to strongly deny the claims, he stated that he is “mindful of the political reality” the situation has created for the party’s goal of defeating incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. With Platner out, Maine Democrats now face a scramble to select a replacement candidate before the state’s July 13 deadline to finalize the November ballot.
Platner said in a video posted online, that he’s proud of what he and his supporters have built, adding his decision is not an admission of guilt – but because of quote “the structures that are being taken away from us by those in power.”
