DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Dallas city council has given the green light to the Sports Commission to submit a bid to become a host city for the 2026 World Cup.
Gina Miller is with FC Dallas and said hosting the games in North Texas makes sense.
“Here in Dallas/Fort Worth, really in the middle of the country. When you look at it geographically, almost in the middle of Canada and North America, we think we’re an ideal location,” she said.
Business leaders are also touting the idea because of the hundreds of millions of dollars the games would bring to the area.
“Experts are forecasting a $400 million economic impact. $9 million of that would be in local tax revenue alone…that’s 3,000 jobs,” said Miller.
The Metroplex hopes to host games and special events as part of a larger bid that includes Canada, Mexico and other American cities such as Chicago, Atlanta and Denver.
Miller said DFW’s bid will be unique in comparison to other cities.
“We have the stadium, we have the training venue, we have the airports, the transportation infrastructure,” she said.
The commission will formally submit the bid next week.
