AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Texas Senate has given the green light to a bill that would give school boards the right to decide if they want to allow their marshals to carry a concealed gun on campus during school hours.
Senate Bill 406, authored by Republican State Senator Brian Birdwell of Grandbury, passed 28 to 3 Wednesday.
Currently, teachers and other employees who are trained as school marshals are allowed to have a gun on campus as long as it is locked up.
If Senate Bill 406 is signed into law, districts would be able to decide if those trained employees can carry concealed weapons on them even among students.
The bill has received with mixed reaction among the public.
Supporters stress the law would give more power to districts while detractors believe no teacher should carry a gun while students are around.
The bill now goes to the Texas House for debate.
