Amazon credited a Texas customer $5.58 on Friday after acknowledging that it had calculated sales taxes on three purchases using a five-digit ZIP code instead of more precise nine-digit location information.
The customer, an employee of The Dallas Express, supplied the November 6 notice and account screenshots. The employee’s Amazon transaction history shows a matching sales-tax credit with a refunded status, and a separate account notice confirms the adjustment.
“We are proactively crediting your account because some of your purchases were eligible for lower sales taxes,” Amazon wrote in the email.
“We’ve updated our systems to make calculations using the more precise location information going forward.”
The notice does not identify the number of customers receiving refunds, or the total amount Amazon plans to return.
Why ZIP Codes Can Produce Different Tax Results
Local tax boundaries do not follow postal ZIP codes, the Texas comptroller explains. A single ZIP code can include locations inside and outside a taxing jurisdiction, and multiple cities can share one ZIP code.
The agency recommends checking local rates by street address. Its guidance also says marketplace providers, including Amazon, must collect and remit tax on third-party sales in Texas based on the shipping destination.
The customer’s email from Amazon attributes the adjustment to greater ZIP-code precision.
An Earlier Amazon Overcharge Case
A Florida customer received a $750 Amazon credit after discovering sales-tax overcharges, News4JAX documented in November 2023. Marianne Hatcher lived in unincorporated St. Johns County, but a Jacksonville shipping-city designation had triggered the higher Duval County rate.
The station noted that the credit exceeded her tax overpayment. An Amazon spokesperson told News4JAX that the company would identify affected customers and contact them about next steps.
Could A Retailer Simply Keep The Excess?
Texas Tax Code Section 111.016 generally requires anyone collecting money as tax to hold it in trust for the state and makes the collector liable for the full amount, plus applicable penalties and interest.
A seller seeking a state refund of tax collected in error must first refund the customer or provide a credit with the customer’s written consent, the comptroller’s guidance states.
What Customers Can Check
Amazon’s email says customers need take no action to receive the credit. To avoid scammers, open Amazon’s app or type Amazon.com into your browser, then select Your Account, Your Payments, and Transactions to check for the credit instead of clicking an email link.
Texas consumers seeking refunds of sales tax they paid in error should first ask the seller, the comptroller advises. Refund claims generally face a four-year deadline from the date the tax became due and payable.
Amazon Touts Billions In Customer Savings
U.S. customers avoided more than 4 billion store trips and saved over $11 billion in fuel costs by shopping with Amazon in 2025, the company estimates on its corporate website. Prime members saved an average of more than $650 on delivery fees and fuel, avoided 64 shopping trips, and saved 55 hours, according to Amazon’s calculations.
