A student faces a firearm charge after a weapons-screening alert at McKinney High School on Wednesday, adding to a series of 2026 incidents across North Texas and raising questions about how detection technology and armed campus security work together.
The recently enrolled student entered through a designated entrance after classes began November 4. The Evolv screening system alerted staff, who located a firearm and detained the student with school resource officers, according to Principal Paula Kent’s parent letter described by WFAA and confirmed by FOX 4.
Police charged the 17-year-old with unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place, a third-degree felony, FOX 4 reported. District officials said the student will not return to McKinney ISD. Officials did not describe the firearm or establish any plan to attack.
Five Other North Texas Incidents In 2026
The McKinney arrest follows several incidents involving students and firearms in area schools.
On October 29, two Garland High School students were arrested after an image circulated of a student holding what police described as a firearm on campus. Officials restricted hallway movement during an investigation; police did not say they recovered that firearm.
At Denton Guyer High School, administrators and a school resource officer found a firearm in a backpack after a student raised concerns. Police arrested two students in the October 2 incident. At Kaufman ISD’s O.P. Norman Junior High School, students alerted officials September 22; district police recovered a firearm and detained a student, FOX 4 documented.
On August 10, O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth entered lockdown after a photograph appeared to show a firearm inside the school. Police took five people into custody; police had not confirmed whether a firearm was present, The Dallas Express detailed. On March 11, an Everman High School student was detained after a classmate reported a handgun. Officers recovered the firearm, but police said it had not been displayed during a separate campus fight, according to The Dallas Express’ account.
Where Texas Schools Use Evolv Screeners
McKinney ISD approved Evolv systems in June 2024 for its three high schools, district stadium, and disciplinary alternative education campus.
Mansfield ISD lists the technology at high schools and middle schools, while Forney ISD’s 2025-26 safety plan identifies screening at its high, middle, and intermediate schools.
Lufkin ISD announced installation at its high and middle schools in February 2026. These examples do not amount to a statewide inventory. The Dallas Express previously covered Evolv deployments in Mansfield, Forney, and Waco.
In Mansfield, an Evolv alert led officials to discover a handgun in a student’s backpack at Legacy High School in January 2025, FOX 4 documented. Yet a successful detection does not guarantee that a scanner will identify every weapon.
The Federal Trade Commission challenged Evolv’s marketing claims in 2024, alleging the company overstated its ability to detect weapons and reduce staffing costs. A federal court entered a stipulated order in December 2024 restricting unsupported claims. Evolv did not admit wrongdoing. The FTC’s action did not concern the November 4 McKinney incident.
Does A Scanner Replace An Armed Officer?
No.
Texas Education Code Section 37.0814 requires school boards to ensure at least one qualifying armed security officer is present at each district campus during regular school hours. An officer who merely rotates among campuses would not, by that fact alone, satisfy simultaneous campus coverage.
Districts may claim a documented “good cause” exception when funding or qualified personnel are unavailable, but the board must adopt an alternative standard and revisit its exception annually. The requirement does not mean every campus necessarily has a sworn police officer; the law provides specific qualifying categories and exceptions.
McKinney ISD’s September 2026 update describes two resource officers at each of its high schools, one at each middle school, 19-armed security officers assigned to elementary campuses, and two sergeants supporting elementary schools.
Those assignments are distinct from the Evolv equipment. The Dallas Express previously examined Dallas ISD’s difficulty staffing the armed-officer mandate when the law took effect in 2023. That earlier report does not establish the district’s current 2026 compliance.
Deadly Lessons From Texas Campuses
The stakes extend beyond confiscation.
In 2018, a 17-year-old Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, student killed eight students and two substitute teachers and wounded others, the FBI documented.
In 2022, a former Robb Elementary student murdered 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde. The Justice Department later identified grave failures in the law-enforcement response. Closer to Dallas, a Timberview High School student wounded two classmates and a teacher in Arlington in 2021; a jury convicted him of attempted capital murder and sentenced him to 12 years, The Dallas Express confirmed.
What Comes Next In McKinney?
Police have not publicly established a motive, whether the firearm was loaded, or whether the student threatened anyone. The district’s published statements do not provide a districtwide count of firearms discovered by Evolv or the system’s false-alert rate.
