DALLAS — Drivers should prepare for a major weekend closure on Interstate 30 through downtown Dallas as crews continue work on the massive I-30 Canyon improvement project.
Weather permitting, all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-30 will close between I-35E and I-45/US 75 beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26.
TxDOT is warning drivers to expect significant delays and avoid unnecessary travel through the area when possible.
You might remember a similar shutdown occurred earlier this year in January, just after a winter storm froze Dallas. In January, crews demolished several bridges stretching over I-30 and got the road reopened by their Monday morning deadline.
What is the I-30 detour?
A signed detour will direct drivers to SH 366/Woodall Rodgers Freeway, which will serve as an alternate east-west connection between I-35E and I-45/US 75.
Other alternate routes are available, but they could add additional distance and travel time.
Drivers traveling through or around downtown Dallas should:
- Plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
- Consider avoiding I-30 through downtown altogether.
- Watch for slower or stopped traffic approaching the closure.
- Follow posted detour signs and work-zone speed limits.
- Put away distractions and watch for construction crews.
Other downtown Dallas closures
Several streets around the I-30 Canyon construction zone will also be closed or restricted:
- Botham Jean/Lamar Boulevard: All lanes closed and detoured at I-30 through late 2027.
- Griffin Street: Narrowed to one lane in each direction at I-30 through early 2028.
- Cesar Chavez Boulevard: All lanes closed and detoured at I-30 through late 2028.
- Cadiz Street: All lanes closed and detoured at I-30. The street will be rebuilt on a new alignment and reopen later in the project.
- Akard Street: All lanes closed and detoured at I-30 through summer 2028.
- Canton Street: Closed between Akard and Griffin streets until further notice.
- Good Latimer Expressway: Narrowed to one lane in each direction at I-30 through early 2028.
Signed detours to nearby streets are in place. Pedestrian access is not permitted inside closed construction zones.
What is the I-30 Canyon project?
The closures are part of TxDOT’s $888 million I-30 Canyon project, which covers the busy stretch of interstate between I-35E and I-45 in downtown Dallas.
The overall project is expected to be completed in 2031, weather permitting.
