An armed suspect died during a Dallas police warrant operation Wednesday after shooting himself, Fox 4 KDFW reported.
Felony warrants lead police to Mustang Inn
Officers found the man in the 400 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway. The Dallas Police Department said he had multiple felony warrants involving narcotics and a probation violation. Police placed the encounter at about 12:21 p.m.
Members of the department’s Crime Response Team arrived at the Mustang Inn to serve the warrants, Fox 4 reported. Police also said Flock technology helped officers find the suspect.
When officers encountered the man, he had a gun, police said. One officer fired toward him. Afterward, the man remained armed and did not follow repeated verbal commands. He then shot himself, according to DPD’s preliminary account.
No officers suffered injuries, police said. However, the written release does not say whether police gunfire struck the suspect. It also does not name him or the officer who fired.
The city’s Flock network also faces scrutiny over its investigative uses and privacy risks. Dallas’ Community Police Oversight Board scheduled a review for Tuesday, as The Dallas Express reported.
Body camera footage due within 72 hours
Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the encounter. The department said it would release body camera footage and more information within 72 hours.
DPD outlines two separate reviews when an officer seriously injures or kills someone, the department explains on its website. First, the Special Investigations Unit handles the criminal investigation. Its detectives interview witnesses and collect evidence. The unit then sends its completed findings to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office for independent review.
At the same time, the Internal Affairs Division reviews whether officers followed department policy, training and use-of-force rules. Those general procedures do not establish a finding about the officer’s conduct in Wednesday’s encounter.
