A woman in her 50s using a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed early Monday while crossing a street in Dallas’ Cedar Crest area, according to police.
Dallas Fire-Rescue crews responded around 2 a.m. to the 700 block of E. Ann Arbor Avenue, where they found the woman critically injured in the roadway. Paramedics took her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police have not released her name while they work to notify her family.
Investigators said the woman was crossing the street outside a designated crosswalk when she was struck by a westbound pickup truck.
The pickup driver remained at the scene, called 911 and has been cooperating with police, according to the Dallas Police Department.
Detectives with the Dallas Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting additional evidence as they work to determine what led to the crash.
Police said preliminary findings indicate pedestrian error may have contributed to the collision. Investigators noted that the woman was in the roadway and difficult for drivers to see because of the darkness.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information about the driver or potential charges was immediately released.
