Dallas police have upgraded charges against a 21-year-old man to murder after the victim of an alleged July assault died from his injuries, authorities said.
Josiah Gomez was initially arrested on July 22 and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury in connection with an altercation outside a business in the 2600 block of Main Street, according to information released on Friday by the Dallas Police Department.
Officers were called to the location at about 11:10 p.m. on July 5, 2026, for a major disturbance with an ambulance call. A preliminary investigation found that Gomez and Sylvester Victor, 26, were engaged in a physical fight when Gomez allegedly pushed Victor down a flight of stairs and then stomped on his head, police said.
Victor was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
On August 6, 2026, the medical examiner notified investigators that Victor had died from his injuries. Gomez’s charge was then upgraded to murder.

Dallas ISD Officer Justin Jones recovering after being shot near Sam’s Club
Officer Justin Jones, 39 (16-year DISD PD veteran assigned to W.T. White High School), remains in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery after surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital for a lower-torso gunshot wound. Jones was shot Thursday morning after he stopped to help a person in crisis on I-635 near Midway Road, drove the individual to the Sam’s Club/Walmart parking lot for safety, and was then shot as the person exited the vehicle.
A second DISD officer applied a life-saving tourniquet at the scene. A suspect is in custody; identity, charges, and recovery of the firearm have not yet been publicly released. More details (including possible body-camera footage) were expected early next week. The incident is confirmed unrelated to the nearby Williamstown Road officer-involved shooting.
Separate Dallas PD officer-involved shooting on Williamstown Road – no injuries
A Dallas police officer fired a single shot during a felony traffic stop, also on Thursday morning, in the 5900 block of Williamstown Road (Melshire Estates area near Preston Road). Officers had tracked a vehicle stolen earlier that morning in an armed robbery/carjacking in the 3500 block of Sunnyvale Street (South Dallas) using Flock cameras.
As the officer exited their vehicle, they discharged one round toward the suspect. No one was injured, and the suspect was arrested at the scene. Dallas PD confirmed the incident is unrelated to the DISD officer shooting. Limited additional public details have been released.
