A Dallas ISD police officer was shot Thursday morning while helping a citizen at an off-campus location in Northwest Dallas, according to the school district.
The shooting happened around 11 a.m. outside a shopping center near LBJ Freeway and Midway Road, where Walmart and Sam’s Club stores are located.
The wounded officer worked for Dallas ISD and had been assisting a citizen away from a district campus, the district confirmed.
The officer suffered serious injuries and was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital. The officer was expected to survive, CBS News Texas reported.
A person experiencing an apparent medical episode reportedly flagged down the officer before the officer was shot in the leg, sources told FOX 4. The officer was in surgery with critical injuries, the outlet reported.
The suspect was reportedly taken into custody. Officials had not released the suspect’s identity or explained what led to the shooting as of Thursday afternoon.
Video from the scene showed dozens of police vehicles from multiple agencies surrounding the shopping center. Crime scene tape enclosed a Dallas ISD police vehicle while officers searched nearby areas.
Second police shooting reported nearby
Dallas police were also investigating an officer-involved shooting reported Thursday morning in the 5900 block of Williamstown Road. The department initially said no injuries had been reported in that event.
FOX 4 said the incidents did not appear related but was still seeking clarification. Authorities had not publicly confirmed whether the two events were connected as of Thursday afternoon.
