In the United States, a regulated process known as natural organic reduction, or human composting, achieves a comparable result of converting remains into soil that can support plant growth, including trees. This method occurs inside licensed facilities rather than through direct burial of an intact body in a pod.
How Natural Organic Reduction Works
In natural organic reduction, the body is placed in a reusable vessel with plant materials such as wood chips, alfalfa, and straw. Naturally occurring microbes break down the remains over a period of approximately 30 to 60 days under controlled temperature, moisture, and aeration conditions.
After the initial transformation, the material is screened to remove any non-organic items such as medical implants, bones are processed, and the soil cures for additional weeks. The process typically yields about one cubic yard of soil per body.

Legal Status Across the United States
Natural organic reduction is legal in 14 states as of mid-2026: Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Vermont, California, New York, Nevada, Arizona, Maryland, Delaware, Minnesota, Maine, Georgia, and New Jersey. Washington legalized the practice in 2019, with the law taking effect in 2020. California’s law becomes operational in 2027; some other states have legalized the process but do not yet have open facilities. The composting process itself cannot be performed in a backyard; it requires a licensed facility. Once soil is produced, its placement is treated similarly to the scattering of cremated remains in many jurisdictions: landowner permission is required, and local ordinances apply.
