The Texas Rangers are heading into next week’s MLB trade deadline right where they want to be — in first place in the American League West.
President of baseball operations Chris Young has made no secret of his intentions to keep pushing for a playoff run. Speaking before the All-Star break, Young praised the team’s identity as much as its record. He said he loves the fight, determination and camaraderie the roster has shown, and that if the Rangers keep playing that way, he believes this group is easily capable of holding the lead and making the playoffs.
“You can feel the energy this group is playing with, the way I like, the Texas Rangers brand of baseball, in my opinion. I love seeing that. If they keep playing like that, I really believe that this team is capable of being a playoff team. That’s my expectation, and that’s what we’re focused on right now,” Young told MLB.com.
The Rangers have already made a significant roster move.
On Wednesday the club acquired catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-handed reliever Chase Silseth from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for infield prospect Angel Arredondo, addressing two crucial needs in one swing.
Getting a quality and consistent catcher has been a problem all year in Arlington, with both Kyle Higashioka and Danny Jansen sidelined on the injured list for big stretches this season. O’Hoppe gives the Rangers a legitimate everyday bat behind the plate, while Silseth, who owns a 2.72 ERA across nearly 40 innings this year, could slot into a high-leverage bullpen role down the stretch.
Upon completion of the trade, O’Hoppe was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock while Silseth is expected to join the active roster. No additional major moves have been announced with the trade deadline still set for Monday, August 3 at 6 p.m. ET.
The team’s somewhat thin farm system, however, could complicate future deals. Dating back to last year’s deadline, the Rangers have parted with 11 prospects in trades for Merrill Kelly, Danny Coulombe, Phil Maton and MacKenzie Gore, and the farm system now ranks in the bottom tier of baseball according to MLB Pipeline. Texas still has two Top 100 prospects in shortstop Sebastian Walcott and right-hander Caden Scarborough, though the system’s overall thin depth likely won’t be enough to bring back a headline name the way it did in 2023.
Beyond the O’Hoppe and Silseth trade, ESPN’s baseball analyst Jeff Passan pointed out a few of the Rangers’ biggest remaining needs as the back of the rotation and catching depth, spotlighting Baltimore left-hander Trevor Rogers as a fit since he’s set for free agency this winter. Rogers has posted a 1.77 ERA over six starts since June and would slot into a rotation with Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, MacKenzie Gore and Kumar Rocker.
Health may end up mattering as much as anything Texas does at the deadline. Corey Seager (back, concussion) and Wyatt Langford (forearm, hamstring) are the club’s two best hitters, yet they’ve played just 26 games together all season. Seager is on the verge of returning after completing back-to-back rehab games at Double-A Frisco (including a home run and strong defensive plays) and could be activated as soon as Friday or early in the Houston series if he experiences no setbacks. Getting both players healthy and in the lineup at the same time down the stretch could matter more than any trade Chris Young makes.
With the season’s final two months looming, the strength of the AL West could shape just how aggressive Texas gets. The division has been unusually competitive top to bottom this year, and the Rangers’ recent form, including the O’Hoppe and Silseth addition, suggests a front office intent on protecting their lead.
As of Friday, July 31, the Rangers remain in first place in the AL West at 55-54 and a half-game ahead of the Astros, though they enter a critical three-game series in Houston on a two-game losing streak after dropping the final two contests of their series at Tampa Bay.
