Fort Worth police fatally shot a knife-wielding man early Sunday during a domestic disturbance call in west Fort Worth, marking the city’s second officer-involved shooting in less than 24 hours. The incident occurred around 6:15 a.m. in the 9200 block of Renee Circle near Interstates 30 and 820.
Patrol officers responded to reports that a known adult male suspect had broken down the front door of an apartment and was physically and verbally fighting with a woman inside while armed with a knife.
When officers arrived, the man was in the parking lot holding a knife to his own throat. He refused verbal commands to drop the weapon and advanced toward officers while still holding the knife. At least one officer opened fire, striking the suspect.
Officers and Fort Worth Fire Department personnel rendered medical aid before the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers or bystanders were injured, reported Fox 4.
Saturday Night Shooting
On Saturday night, Fort Worth officers fatally shot a suspect who pulled a handgun after a short vehicle pursuit near the I-35W service road on the city’s south side. Police Chief Eddie Garcia said officers were seeking the man because he had a felony warrant after cutting off his ankle monitor following a previous arrest for sexual assault of a child.
Around 8 p.m., officers located the suspect driving near I-35 and Risinger Road. He led them on a brief chase that ended in a parking lot in the 100 block of Palette Drive off the South Freeway service road near Everman Parkway. When officers approached the vehicle and issued commands, the man pulled a handgun. Officers fired, striking him. Police and EMS provided medical aid, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A gun was later found inside the vehicle. No officers or civilians were injured, and no passengers were in the suspect’s vehicle.
Ongoing Investigations
The Fort Worth Police Department’s Major Case Unit is investigating both shootings. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the deceased and determine the official causes and manners of death. Police plan to release additional details, including body-camera video, at a news conference expected next week.
Chief Garcia confirmed the sequence of events in both cases and noted that the department is gathering further information. According to a 911 call log related to the Sunday incident, the woman reported the suspect was her ex-boyfriend.
The two fatal encounters occurred within hours of each other in different parts of the city.
