Kroger offers the lowest overall prices on everyday grocery staples among four major supermarket chains, according to a new comparison study, edging out Walmart, Aldi, and Albertsons as consumers continue looking for ways to reduce food costs.
The study, conducted by Restaurant Furniture Plus, compared the prices of 15 store-brand grocery items across Kroger, Walmart, Aldi, and Albertsons. Researchers found Kroger had the least expensive overall shopping basket at $30, followed by Walmart at $30.95, Aldi at $33.15, and Albertsons at $35.58, Supermarket News reported.
Kroger also posted the lowest prices on 10 of the 15 items analyzed, the most of any retailer in the study.
Among the products where Kroger led were:
- Canned diced tomatoes (14.5-ounce can): $0.72
- Spaghetti (16-ounce package): $0.96
- Granulated sugar (4-pound bag): $2.56
- Large eggs (dozen): $1.29
- Wheat bread (20-ounce loaf): $1.40
Walmart ranked second overall and offered the lowest prices on three products, including:
- Boneless chicken breast: $1.95 per pound
- White rice (2-pound bag): $1.34
- Canned black beans (15-ounce can): $0.85
Aldi finished third and posted the lowest price on two products, including a gallon of whole milk for $3.05. Albertsons recorded the highest overall basket cost among the four retailers at $35.58.
The findings come as grocery prices remain a concern for many households, with shoppers increasingly turning to store brands, digital coupons, and loyalty programs to stretch their budgets.
Kroger, headquartered in Cincinnati, operates more than 1,200 stores across 16 states and has recently emphasized affordability. In May, the company announced plans to lower prices on thousands of products through a phased rollout after testing price reductions in select markets.
CEO Greg Foran said Kroger intends to offset the cost of lower prices by reducing internal expenses, including importing merchandise directly and expanding the use of technology throughout its operations.
While the study found Kroger to be the lowest-cost option overall, researchers noted that prices vary by location and promotions change regularly. They recommended shoppers compare unit prices and take advantage of weekly sales, digital coupons, and rewards programs regardless of where they shop.
The comparison represents a snapshot of pricing for 15 common grocery staples rather than the cost of a complete weekly shopping trip, but it highlights the continued competition among major grocery chains as consumers seek value amid elevated food prices.
