Volunteers with Wings of Rescue loaded 18,000 pounds of pet supplies onto a plane at a private airstrip in Addison on Thursday, bound for the Texas Hill Country, to aid animals affected by last week’s deadly flooding.
The flight is carrying pet food, veterinary supplies, crates, and other essentials to shelters that have been pushed past capacity as families cope with the loss of their homes, Fox 4 KDFW reported.
Wings of Rescue, a nonprofit focused on flights that assist at-risk animals, coordinated the relief effort with the Humane Society of North Texas, Operation Kindness, the SPCA of Texas, and additional partners to gather the donations.
Once the plane lands, Best Friends Animal Society and Austin Pets Alive! are set to unload the cargo and distribute the supplies directly to families in need.
“Best Friends Animal Society, along with Austin Pets Alive are going to be unloading, and from there, they will distribute directly to the families who are in need. I mean, it’s just so well-orchestrated. I can’t say enough. It’s not our first rodeo,” said Cassie Davidson with the Humane Society of North Texas, per Fox 4.
The delivery is one piece of a broader disaster response by the organization. Wings of Rescue has also flown shelter animals out of Central Texas to open up kennel space in the affected region.
Volunteers are additionally working to reconnect lost pets with their owners.
